We don’t usually cover the Southern/Outlaw Country here at all but when asked if we were interested in streaming Shooter Jennings’ new single “Wake Up” from his upcoming release Black Ribbons we couldn’t pass it up. I had been reading that Jennings was taking a different direction on this new release and was going to try more of a “60′s/70′s psychedelic rock vibe”. You have my attention.
It’s obvious that Jennings is trying to break into a new field. He replaced long time band .357′s with new band Hierophant and ventured into uncharted territory by playing The Warped Tour over the summer alongside with all those tatted punk kids.
Over the course of the past few years, the .357’s and I have had a great run blending country and roots music with modern sounds,” says Jennings. “But we did everything we could given the direction we were going. Now it’s time for a new adventure. With Hierophant, I’m free to take everything—sounds, words, images—wherever I want. Without genre restrictions, we’re building environments of sound that take the listener down a road of no return. It’s hard and it’s loud and the message behind it is just as important to me as the music itself.
The album so far has gotten mixed reviews depending on what camp you’re in. The Old Country camp is calling foul while the New Country camp is welcoming the new sound.
What do I think of the track you ask being the indie music snob that I am? I love it. Where country usually loses me is with the twang and songs of lost dogs and dependable trucks. “Wake Up” has none of this. Instead there are Pink Floyd influences around every turn. From the promised psychedelic organ lines and reverberating lyrics such as “They teach you that you’re just a number/As they program you in school”. If this is a prime example of what Black Ribbons holds for us then count me in.
Black Ribbons is out March 3rd and “Wake Up” will be released digitally on December 22nd along with a b-side remix called “Wake Up (Pig Flu Mix)”. Apparently the artwork and tracklist are being kept under lock and key as there is an “interesting and unexpected collaboration” and a special guest that narrates the album.

This track is badass! And who cares about “Old Country” or “New Country”–it’s music! It’s art! It doesn’t need categories! All that matters is whether it’s good or not and this is definitely GOOD!!!!! REAL GOOD!!!!
Wow, that was truly horrible. It has no resemblance to the old or the new country music whatsoever. If I had to guess, since you love it so much, this is probably the type of shit you’re used to listening to anyway, so it would make sense that you might mistake this “Trent Reznor/Roger Waters Bastard Love Child of a Steaming Pile of Shit” for any type of country music.
Wow, a bit Moody are we? Let me tag a stab here, you’re from the Old Country camp, right?
You missed. Don’t camp anywhere. Love all genres of Music.
That is NOT any kind of Country Music.
I never claimed in the post that this was any kind of country. You have to agree that the country music fans are the ones that were the most interested in this release therefore the “New Country/Old Country” remark. If I had said “the grunge kids love it while the hair metal fans hate it” that wouldn’t have made any sense, but they don’t care either way.
And yes, I love Pink Floyd which of course leads to my liking of this track.
Pretty much the same thing Hank III did. Used country music to get his name out there for other genres.
This stuff sounds like Pure Shit !!!
This sounds like shit, all his stuff is bad but this really sucks.
Please, let’s all find another — slightly more descriptive — adjective.
You’re right Fred, how about if we use the word “poop”?
I hear you. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not above a well-placed S-bomb myself. But all we’re hearing is that this track is shit, shit, shit, and shit. I was curious to learn more. It’s shit because it’s a departure from his other music? It’s shit because the guitar sounds like a $100 Casio? It’s shit because he couldn’t sing himself out of paper bag? Not that what I’m about to say matters, but I don’t exactly love the track either. But “shit” wasn’t my first thought.
I have to ask, since it seems you’re a regular reader of this comments thread — but previously mentioned your disregard for Patrick’s taste in music — are you only here for the banter? Or from time to time do we uncover some material that you enjoy?
We need a swear jar like this
I think you may have new country and old country over simplified.
Never heard so many ignorant people in my life. Scared of different or what? I will say I don’t like new country more of an old school country/southern rock. And I was not surprised that he wanted to change his sound and not be associated with anything going on in Nashville. Nashville over the last few years has killed country music. If you don’t like it then don’t listen to it, don’t bash it because you don’t get it. Just makes you look childish and ignorant.
As previously stated, if you didn’t like Shooter’s music in the past its likely you won’t here either. If you did, then you should have expected this after Warped Tour. I personally like it and hope for better on the actual album. I’m glad he isn’t restricting himself to genre boundaries other people set up. There’s nothing musically shit about it, solid keys, guitar, and vocals. If you don’t like the style, it’s not to put him to blame.
Simply horrible.
[...] Shooter Jennings – Black Ribbon I received an advanced copy of Shooter Jennings & Hierophant’s Black Ribbon in the mail today but before I plop it in the CD player I want to show you the fantastic [...]
I think it’s the “country” thing that’s mixing a lot of people up here. THIS ALBUM IS *NOT* COUNTRY.
Not anywhere close, thank God. (Yes, count me as a hater; I can’t stand country music.) If my favorite rock band put out a country album, I wouldn’t hold a grudge against them — but I wouldn’t buy it, either — so if you’re a country fan, that’s fine, just don’t buy this one and keep listening to what you like.
This is a full-on ROCK album.
And as a die-hard rock and metal fan, sometime rock musician, and somewhat reluctant fan of progressive rock, I say it kicks ass.
