The missus has been reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for what seems like months. She’s a fast reader, so she’s either stuck in a loop of read and re-read, or she’s sauntering through, savoring every word like amuse bouche. I guess I could always, you know? Ask?

Either way, we’re both beside ourselves watching this trailer for the film adaptation. Her, well, for the film adaptation. Me, for the soundtrack. Trent Reznor. Atticus Ross. Three hours of material. A Bryan Ferry cover. A Led Zeppelin cover. (Full account here.)

Watch the trailer below for sampling of the latter. Hearing Karen O sing “Valhalla, I am coming” will make your week.

Indie music has one, which is all fine and good, congratulations, thanks for asking. But we, the staff members of tMiM, think that indie music blogging should have one as well. Because — and let’s be frank, here — it’s about what blogs good, not what sounds good. So here they are, in no particular order, the proposed galleys to our Indie Music Bloggers Alphabet Book:

(This just in, one of our loyal readers just informed us that the order is “alphabetical.” Psh! If you’re going to get all jargony on us.)

A is for Animal Collective.
B is for Baltimore, their home town!
C is for Collective. Like we said, Animal Collective.
D is for Deakin, of Animal Collective. Don’t make us tell you twice!
E is for Elbow, who are Scottish!
F is for Franz Ferdinand, also Scottish!
G is for Grizzly Bear (not for “Gorilla vs. Bear,” mind you).
H is for Hair. Regina Spektor’s hair is quite red.
I is for Indie band snobbery.
J is for Jane, which totally has a bandmate in common with Animal Collective.
K is for Korg M3, the brand of keyboard Animal Collective uses.
L is for Leon, as in they have Kings.
M is for Men; the “Dead Weather” variety, to be specific.
N is for Nuptials, Trent Reznor, Meg White, Ben Gibbard & Ryan Adams all recited theirs in the last few months.
O is for Oasis, the brothers are getting along, now they’re not, now they are, now they’re not…
P is for Piano, Regina’s instrument.
Q is for Q and not U.
R is for Regina.
S is for Spektor, Regina.
T is for “Two Weeks”, Grizzly Bear’s latest creepy video.
U is for Uncle, as in me crying, “enough with Animal Collective!”
V is for Vampire Weekend.
W is for Weekend, Vampire.
X is for XL Records, Vampire Weekend’s label.
Y is for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who have had a track remixed by Animal Collective!
Z is for Zero, the track in question!

Currently the Billboard Top 200 shows Hannah Montana Soundtrack, Day 26, Rascal Flatts and the Twilight Soundtrack rounding out the top four albums for this week. But how much can we really trust this ranking.

The Billboard Hot 100 started on August 4, 1958 with Ricky Nelson’s song “Poor Little Fool” being the first to top the list. Since then the music industry has gone through so many changes that Ricky Nelson wouldn’t even recognize it anymore. Artists have learned through the years how to play the system in order to get their album or single to the top of the charts by timing their release during the weakest possible competition or by massively discounting the single or album to the point where each individual sale represents a financial loss.

In this time where most music is purchased or discovered via the internet We Are Hunted have started using the latest technology of social networks, forums, P2P networks and Twitter in order to agregate an accurate list of the top artists that are being talked about and listened to. According to their list the top artists of the week are Bat For Lashes, Silversun Pickups, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s and Kanye West. The great thing about We Are Hunted is that if you choose to see the top songs of the day/week/month you can stream them in their entirety.

SNL has had two great musical guests on over the past two weeks, that’s rare for them. Phoenix played on the 4th and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s played last Saturday. Both bands had potential to deliver a great show and both had reasons that they needed to. Phoenix is still trying to get more recognition with their upcoming release and YYY’s need to make retribution for their sub-par new release. That being said neither band delivered a stellar performance or anything close to it. Although Phoenix was the more enjoyable band to watch, the performance was impersonal and they seemed almost unexcited to be playing a major television appearance. Now I have never seen Phoenix live or seen clips from a live performance, maybe that’s just the way they are, you can judge for yourself. I wasn’t able to fine YouTube clips of the performances but you can watch then over at My Old Kentucky Blog.

The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s are a completely different story though. Usually when a band has a new release and they appear on SNL they will play two songs from that new release but not YYY’s. They played “Zero”, that most loved and hated of first singles off of It’s Blitz! and then they played “Maps” from their debut release 6 years ago. Having a band do that makes me think that they are a little nervous about the reviews they have been reading about the new stuff and want to remind people why they liked them in the first place. Karen O also seemed out of place and uncomfortable. I know that “Maps” doesn’t really lend itself to her normal shenanigans but she still seemed a bit distant and unnatural.

Due to leaks and other problems the YYY’s were forced to digitally release It’s Blitz! a month earlier then originally planned. If you still like to have something physically in your hands then you’ll need to wait until March 31st, but even that is still two weeks earlier then the original release date. I actually kind of like it when an album gets leaked. Not because I can download it illegally but because it puts us small blogs that don’t get advance copies on the same field as the big boys.

Let me start off by saying that I have been stoked about this album release since it was announced earlier this year. Then I started to get a little nervous and now I feel as though I’m going to vomit in my Wheaties. The reviews have started flowing in and they are all over the map. Some think that it is “undeniably their greatest album” while others are afraid that we will never see the YYY’s that we have grown to love over the past 6 years if we accept this watered down sound. It’s Blitz! doesn’t challenge any of the preconceived notions that mainstream music has come to follow like sheep. Fever To Tell, the YYY’s debut album, had served as an awakening and possibly a pattern for how to give the mainstream the big one finger salute, but now it seems that the YYY’s have fallen back in line. Let’s hope they grow another wild hair or someone else decides to take the lead.

Piece of cake: that’s Amanda Palmer, of the Dresden Dolls. It’s funny, passionate, neurotic, gossipy, breathless, profane, long-winded, and in the end, touching. For a sample, try this recent entry:

i had a poster of brian setzer above my bed that i ritualistically HAD to KISS before going to bed every night.
this drove my mother crazy. i think she preferred it when i had to ritualistically arrange my stuffed animals.
she said she liked their music but did not like their outfits.
i did not care. i was eight. i wanted to marry brian setzer. he would understand me.
he was, of course, later to be ousted by prince…then george michael (who knew he was gay back then? i sure didn’t), then robert smith…then it gets too dangerous and i have to stop.

Or this one:

before i forget, i’m PLAYING COACHELLA this april.
yes yes yes! some of the other people on the bill are FUCKING ROBERT SMITH (i die, and i’ll finally tell him we were supposed to get married a WHILE ago), LEONARD COHEN (i die, no words for that), MORRISSEY (i kind of die, but in a sarcastic kind of way), MY BLOODY VALENTINE (die die die die die, don’t forget earplugs), CONOR OBERST (i wither, note to self: don’t drink so much this time and keep clothes on), HENRY ROLLINS (hug reprise please?), AMY WINEHOUSE (she can have my drinks, maybe she’ll attack conor in my stead), ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS (always sublime, the new record is great, by the way) and the YEAH YEAH YEAHS (karen o and AFP celebrity death match, go!)….and many many amazing others…beirut, the killers, drive-by truckers, throbbing gristle (!!!!!), public enemy….it’s going to be INSANE. we should do something fucked up. i’ll think about it. naked parade? naked blindfolded parade? should i finally do a set blindfolded? eh…
we can do better than that. hit me with ideas. it’s the DESERT. there are no police. we can get jiggy.

Fired up? Ready to go? Guilty as charged.

The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s have spent the last 6 years pushing the envelope of simplicity and doing it quite successfully I might add. But, with the release of their first single from the April 14th release, It’s Blitz!, things have gotten too simple. “Zero” starts out with a distorted, reverberating guitar that holds potential for a fantastic track but once the chorus kicks in nothing is added but a simple drum line and a faint keyboard. “Zero” never reaches that full potential and Karen O’s vocals don’t help the matter any. She never takes that leap of faith to make us ask “Did she mean to sound like that?” Which is what makes a YYY’s albums what it is.

I was unable to embed the song into the post so you will have to go here to take a listen.

Below is the album cover and track list but don’t even get me started on the faux pas of putting your first single as the first track, that’s discussion for another day.
