Pounding headache + training is about to do me in + “coworkers” calling in “sick” makes for a pretty slow blog day. So in case you’re the one person who hasn’t read yet, Peter Gabriel has covered Arcade Fire’s “My Body is a Cage” (context here, hat tip: Stereogum.) I’m not 100% sold on the results, and I wish he would have picked any other track but that one. (“Antichrist Television Blues?” “No Cars Go?” “Laika?” “Tunnels?” “Haiti?”)

Here was my liveblog assessment to Patrick:

From 0:00 to 2:33, very ordinary. The fairy tale, Danny Elfman stuff is irritating.

From 2:34 to 4:13, huge. Maybe too huge. But definitely huge.

From 4:14 on, back to ordinary. And the fairy tale, Danny Elfman stuff is still irritating.

I don’t know. Too many left turns maybe. I really want to like it. You?

Sorry for the Hit and Run, but not so sorry to say much other than, “gotta run.”

His latest dispatch is titled The law of the little shovel and it goes something like this:

If you want to dig a big hole, you need to stay in one place.

If you walk around town with a little shovel, you’ll just end up digging thousands of little holes, not one big one.

Call on one person ten times and you might make the sale. Call on ten people once each and you will likely get ten rejections.

You’ll find no answers on my end, only questions. Could I learn something from this? Could you? Could music bloggers in general?

Could songwriters and musicians learn something from this? Could record labels?

As the style of the music is geared for movie trailers, some television and media markets, it is only available to music supervisors, editors and producers at our clients’ workplaces. Given the state of the music industry at the current moment, we find that this is the most sensible model for us. We appreciate the fans out there that love trailer music…

Ahem. Anyway, yes: movie trailer music. I have to admit I get swept away by it. This is “Freedom Fighter” from the Star Trek film trailer:

I must say that I’m glad Novoselic found something after the untimely demise of Nirvana. I have my doubts that he could have pulled a Dave Grohl and stepped up to the mic to churn out some lasting grunge. Although he did have a stint with the band Eyes Adrift, where he sang lead vocals, which was really the only way he was going to keep from drifting into obscurity. But as we all know guitarists arent’ necessarily singers and since Novoselic played bass that fact is doubly true.
