I’ve missed Fever Ray lately. There’s just been something missing on the freakier side of indie rock with her not constantly in the picture. Hopefully this new track from the Red Riding Hood movie will restore some of that to the scene.

The track is dark for sure. Nothing outside of the realm of Karin Dreijer Andersson’s ability and I’ll bet it fits in nicely with the dark aura of the movie.

Via NME, Fever Ray has released a cover track of Peter Gabriel’s “Mercy Street” from the 1986 album So which she intends to released as a 7″ later this year.

According to Andersson:

We made it more intense and faster to fit our eccentric pecussionists and energetic live musicians. It is a monotone track but we worked with the dynamics trying to make it sparkle. I listened to it a lot when I was around 15, and it still moves me. It made me start reading Anne Sexton too.

The track plays well into Karin Dreijer Andersson’s use of hypnotizing percussions but doesn’t really reach the pinnacle that I have come to expect from her. The track lacks some of the eerie “what’s hiding around the corner” aspect that Andersson has mastered and that her fans love her for.

Fever Ray’s Karin Dreijer Andersson is never one to shy away from leaving a few onlookers in shock and awe. So when she won an award at the P3 Guld award show in Sweden she again took an opportunity to make a few more people, that may be unfamiliar with her work, say “Que?”.

Andersson isn’t one to show her face often so being faced with the task of what to do at an award show must have gotten her very excited to think of all the ways she could really crew with people. I think she made a great choice.

I’m not a person that would consider themself “artsy” in any way. When I watch a music video I don’t look for cinematography or camera angle, I look to be entertained for a few minutes, for something that is going to keep me interested and guessing as to what is going to happen next. That being said, making a list of top ten videos of the year without them being also my favorite tracks of the year is difficult. But I’ll try.

Fever Ray’s Karin Dreijer Andersson has released some of the greatest videos that we’ve seen this year. In what I believe to be the fifth video from her debut self-titled release we don’t find the spook factor that has been her general theme in the previous videos but find more of an apocalyptic setting.

This isn’t one of the greatest songs off the album and in turn it’s not the greatest video either. As much as I don’t like to be scared I do enjoy the paranoia feeling of having to look over my shoulder when I watch the previous videos.

Booze? check. Munchies? check. Playlist?…Playlist?…Bueller? Don’t worry, Fever Ray‘s Karin Dreijer Andersson has your back. And who better? The reigning Queen of Everything Eerie probably lives for this time of year when everything that she’s done is seen as beneficial rather than just weird.

Resident Advisor has collaborated with Andersson to present you a playlist that will be perfect for your Halloween bash this weekend. The mix features Shackleton, Suicide, Zola Jesus, Burial Hex, Bruce Haack, Amadou & Miriam, Neil Young and Krause Duo. Although it seems like an odd mix, the hour long track flows beautifully.

The release of videos though have been some of the most intriguing parts of this album, they’re just down right frightening sometimes. For the most part they are filmed in barely lit rooms with Andersson usually in a painted face. The darkness of the videos leaves your mind to wander about what you’re seeing and let’s you make the video what you want it to be.

Taking a sabbatical from The Knife, Karin Dreijer Andersson, takes us to a dark place in her debut solo album and leaves us there to find our own way out. Using the same formula throughout, the entire album could be played without breaks between the tracks and make flawless transitions for one long, haunting song. I have listened to the album once today already and am sure that it will make a couple more spins before the day is out.

This album has a chance to make it to my Top Ten for the year. Definitely worth a listen.

I first became mildly intrigue by this release a few months ago when I saw the video below which is part Twisted Sister and part M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water.
