Video Typhoon – “The Honest Truth” on Letterman

Typhoon is one of the greatest bands that I’ve been directed to this year. If it was possible to wear out digital copies of albums then Hunger and Thirst and A New Kind of House would have needed to be replaced a few times over by now.

As a reward for their hard work and mad song writing skills, Typhoon was able to make their network television debut on Letterman last night where they performed the opening track to Hunger and Thirst. “The Honest Truth” is a multifaceted track that tinkers with interesting syncopation and choral appeal.

Letterman has been doing a pretty good job of spotlighting the indie rock scene lately, maybe he’s trying to catch up with Fallon’s great taste in musical guests. On Monday he had Fanfarlo on for their network television debut and last night his musical guest was Mumford & Sons who were also making their network television debut. The group played “Little Lion Man” off their debut album Sigh No More and of course had to edit the lyrics a little bit.

Fanfarlo made their network televisions debut last night on Letterman performing the track “Harold T. Wilkins, Or How To Wait For A Very Long Time” off their debut album Reservoir. They pull off a great job, I’m just not so sure about that keyboard line that starts about halfway through the song. I had to go back and listen to the original to see if it was there, it is but mastered in far better on the album then during the show last night.

The quintet also have released an iTunes exclusive EP this week simply called the iTunes Session. All the songs are off of Reservoir but are recorded live.

I just got an email from Baeble Music saying that they filmed Fanfarlo’s concert at Johnny Brenda’s in Philly as well as have a contest brewing. Three lucky fans will get a signed copy of Reservoir and a T-shirt.

Matt & Kim on Kimmel

Matt & Kim appeared on Jimmy Kimmel the other night and while I do enjoy their own brand of indie pop they just didn’t bring it this time. They performed the Bacardi time traveling man commercial track “Daylight”. Kim was her typical over caffeinated self, even standing on her drums during one of the verses, but while Kim was loud and boisterous on the drums Matt was pretty limp especially on the chorus. At least I can say that they didn’t get naked, maybe they’re waiting to pull a Drew Barrymore on Letterman.

Brendan Benson on Letterman

Brendan Benson made an appearance on Letterman on Friday. While he did a great job with the track “A Whole Lot Better”, it’s just not the song that I would have picked from the album. My Old, Familiar Friend is chuck full of great songs with catchy hooks but “A Whole Lot Better” is not the spotlight of the at all.

Of course Dave went ga ga over the performance but what’s new.

Mastodon on Letterman

Mastodon made an appearance on Letterman last night and as much as I don’t ever want to believe Fred, most of the time he’s right, especially when he says that Letterman really doesn’t mean it when he goes over to the musical guest of the night and says “Good job!”, “That was great!” or “It’s good to see you”.This fact was especially true on Friday when Mastodon must have forgotten their IED’s because they couldn’t hit a note in tune with one another to save their lives. As rough as this performance is Crack The Skye is still up there on my list for albums of the year but this was a pitiful performance. Where Dave was “frightened” before the performance I was frightened during.

Beirut on Letterman

Beirut made their network television debut via David Letterman on Friday night in support of their upcoming EP March of The Zapotec, although they didn’t play a track off the new EP, it was still a fantastic performance.
