cover: Fela Kuti’s “Lady,” by Tune-Yards et. al.

Now we’re talking. From Knitting Factory Records:

In support of the (RED) Rush to Zero initiative to help end the transmission of HIV from moms to their babies, we are donating proceeds of this wonderful remake of Fela’s “Lady” by tUnE-yArDs, Angélique Kidjo, ?uestlove, and Akua Naru to the charity. We would love your support! Stream the track below and buy the track exclusively from iTunes.

The remake preserves the source material’s scorching acoustic jazz and acid-blues-arena-rock McCartneyism, while paring off some limbs, offering a second-verse rap, and — not insignificantly — letting the women speak this time around. This far exceeds anything Merrill Garbus released on Whokill. Play it loud.
