It’s been quite some time since we’ve heard anything out of Rufus Wainwright and honestly I’ve missed his voice. Since the release of his 2007 album Release The Stars, Wainwright has had his hands in some unusual projects including two live albums, one of which is a tribute to Judy Garland, a studio album of original work released as an homage to his late mother, the folk singer Kate McGarrigle, as well as writing his first opera title Prima Donna which won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Musical/Opera.
Wainwright spent about half of 2011 in the studio recording for his upcoming album Out of the Game which is scheduled to be released in the Spring. As his first stop to start building up excitement behind the new release Wainwright made an appearance on Jimmy Fallon last night going back to basics in singing “Minuit, chrétiens” (Midnight, Christians), the Placide Cappeau poem in which the classic Christmas song “O Holy Night” is based. Wainwright presents an resounding performance while being backed by a more tamed down The Roots.
