Bright Eyes – “Haile Selassie”

Spinner premiered a new Bright Eyes track this morning off the upcoming album The People’s Key. “Haile Selassie”, I learned is not just a title to a song be a rather significant person the African history as you can read below. That’s all well and good but how’s the song? It takes a rather repetitive tone from the on set. A march of sorts. It’s a little bit of a stretch from the typical Bright Eyes that you might be used to but considering the journey that Oberst has taken since Cassadega, with Monsters of Folk and the Mystic Valley Band, it’s no surprise that Oberst return a changed musician.

Ethiopia’s Emperor from 1930 to 1974, the actual Haile Selassie was not only a defining figure in African history but he also transcended his political post to, perhaps unexpectedly, become a central religious figure in Jamaica. The Rastafari movement considers him to be the Biblical messiah, the son of God here to lead followers into a new golden age.

The People’s Key is out February 15th via Saddle Creek Records.

You can also listen to 30sec clips of each track at Amazon right now.
