Strange Shapes is a refreshing reprieve from the constant barrage of lo-fi, 4 track recordings that seem to be making it into my mailbox these days. This Brooklyn quartet has the good part of Vampire Weekend’s surf rock but without all the extra baggage or lawsuits. Each track is continually moving and progressing.
There was a lot of time put into these songs, they never seem to repeat themselves for more than a few measures before the structure is changed and, from what I’ve heard, it doesn’t appear that the band would be caught dead delivering boring old power chords to their listeners. There is intricacy in the guitar work that is accentuated by the addition of steel drum.
This is what summer music is supposed to sound like.
Snag songs from the double EP below or you can download them from here just in case you want to make sure they know you care.
