Meligrove Band’s 2006 release, Planets Conspire, is one of my greatest finds of all time. The album was packed with psychedelic fuzz mixed with garage power pop, but then they just seemed to disappear and other bands ended up taking their place on my play lists. Way too many years later and the band is set to release their follow up on Last Gang Records.
The first single off the new album, Shimmering Light, is “Halflight” and seems as though it can’t decide what it wants to be, the track dances between indie-pop and more lo-fi in the vein of Planets Conspire and even throws in some Boy Scout, happy camper whistling at the end. The track is far less garage rock and piano driven than what we’ve heard from the band in the past and I’m hoping that this is not an accurate sample for the new album.
The band told Spinner:
It’s hard to talk about it without speaking in terms of how it’s different than the previous album, this time the songs are shorter, it’s a lot less noisier, and there’s a lot less piano… it’s much more guitar heavy too.
The 7″ for “Halflight” will be released on August 24th with the b-side being a cover of fellow Toronto-ites DD/MM/YYYY track “Super VGF”
Here’s the video for “Everyone’s A Winner” off Planets Conspire.
Shimmering Light is out September 21st.
