It was one season of decent sci-fi/fantasy, followed by a weaker season 2 where the writer’s fell in love with their ‘cleverness’. There was so much evil scientist/magic numbers/mystery inhabitants/strange coincidences piled up it was crystal clear no writer could ever pay that off in a meaningful, rule-bound way.
Following that, it was literally four seasons of treading water. As much as people may love the characters, writing-wise it was simply one device after another that just kicked the can down the road in various forms. That’s what kills me about the immense praise ‘Lost’ get’s; not only do people read, way, way too much into it, but in terms of story construction it fell apart at the first quarter-pole.
