Deer Tick – "20 Miles" from The Black Dirt Sessions

Deer Tick had a fabulous 2009. They released Born On Flag Day which had one of my top ten tracks of the year on it, got props from news man Brian Williams on NBC new’s BritTunes segment, named by Rollingstones “the country-rock breakthrough of the year”, performed for Pentagon TV multiple times for the troops and played many music festivals. In amongst all this somehow they still found time to make it back into the studio and record new material for us to enjoy in 2010.

The Black Dirt Sessions is set to be released June 8th on Partisan Records and from what I’m told it explores the darker side of the band, touching on subjects like death, mortality and the existence of God. The first single off the record is “20 Miles”, while it still, of course, features the raspy voice of John McCauley, it is quite a bit more subdued than the raucous Deer Tick that we’ve heard in the past.
