Taking A Look Back At 2009

It impossible to listen to every album that gets released during 2009 in the many indie genres and sub-genres so it's very easy to pass by many albums that might have deserved a chance at...

Most Grievous of Errors

I have so many release dates running through my head during the year that sometimes they get mixed up and it doesn't help to try and keep track of both US and UK dates. Normally...

There went the lists

We had a bit more year-end stuff planned for you, but our department was recently cut from seven to five, and take a wild guess who got to pick up the slack? So here...

Artist of the decade, 2000-2009

She doesn't remember it this way, but I do. This would have been late 2004 or early 2005. I was delirious with fever and half-sleeping, half-listening to her sing our infant son to...

"we really wanted to put dre's 2001 on here but realised it came out in 1999. in 2019 people will want to put this on these lists but will realise it came out in 2009. i think i just compared this to 2001. that's fine, i'm sticking with it."

Most Anticipated Albums for 2010

2009 came, dumped a crap ton of great music on our heads and is now departing so it’s time to start looking forward to what 2010 might have in store for us.

The list below is not in order of what album I am most looking forward to the most but is rather in order of release date.

MidlakeThe Courage of Others (February 2nd)

The indie scene has been waiting for this follow up release since 2006. Each year promising to be the year but now with a few tracks leaked, an album cover and a track list I think the time might actually be here.

YeasayersOdd Blood (February 9th)

We’ve already heard “Ambling Alp” and if we’re all lucky that will be the blueprint that the group used for the remaining tracks on the album.

Frightened RabbitsThe Winter of Mixed Drinks (March 9th)

“Swim Until You Can’t See Land” makes the wait for this release all that much harder, the track is great and really picks up where Midnight Organ Fight left off.

Local NativesGorilla Manor (February 16th)

I’ve talked a number of times about this group through out the year. Technically Gorilla Manor has already been released in the UK but since we haven’t seen it on US soil it still goes down on the list of anticipation.

Shout Out LoudsWork (February 23rd)

We’ve already heard one of the tracks off the Shout Out Louds Work LP and it sounds great let’s hope that they can follow through.

ShearwaterThe Golden Archipelago (February 23rd)

I wasn’t terribly impressed with 2008′s Rook but after hearing “Castaways” they now have my attention.

Rogue WavePermalight (March 2nd)

2007′s Asleep At Heaven’s Gate never got as much credit as it should have. I wish that I could say I’ve heard a few tracks from the album to let you know if it follows in line with Heaven’s Gate but I unfortunately haven’t.

The New PornographersTBD (Late Spring)

Not much word at all on this one other than a predicted release date of late spring

Arcade FireTBD (May 2010?)

Nothing is set in stone on this one but the rumors have been flying ever since tMiM favorite Mumford & Sons let the cat out of the bag in an interview with BBC6.

InterpolTBD (Early 2010)

Interpol has never really been on my favorite list but Paul Banks released one of the great solo albums that we heard this year. If he can reproduce the same energy into an Interpol LP then he might just have a top ten album on his hands.

Fleet FoxesTBD (TBD)

Robin Pecknold told Pitchfork that there will definitely be a new album in 2010 and that the songs on the new album will be less poppy and a little less upbeat than they were on 2008′s self-titled album

Sufjan StevensTBD (TBD)

This release is pretty unsubstantiated at this point but we can all have dreams right?

The ShinsTBD (TBD)

Early on in the year we heard two new tracks out of the new Shins line up after Jessa Sandoval and Marty Crandall got the boot then the lines went dead and nothing more was said. This will be their first CD release on Mercer’s own label Aural Apothecary instead of Sub Pop.

Band of HorsesNight Rainbows (TBD)

Sub Pop is saying that there will definitely be a release in 2010 but no exact date yet

Amy WinehouseTBD (TBD)

As much as I would love to believe this one is going to happen I won’t until I see it on the shelves.
