In March we met La Machine, concluding, "Sung through a pulse jet and stripped down to the sub-bass." Their dark-as-a-cave, quick-as-a-Zoloft releases continue with the Symptomatic EP. The title track sets paint-can percussion...

profile: John Harrison of Cedar Lines

Sunday, January 29, 2012, 11:45am John Harrison can’t find a kit that he likes. The drum line is already written: a smudged, industrial arrangement that summons Cleveland, not Cincinnati. It would work just fine on its own,...

Radio Stations That Don't Suck, KGSR Edition

tmimsradiostationsthatdontsuckThe Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex has some of the worst terrestrial radio in the U.S.A. I’d say the world but I imagine that the radio stations in Iran and North Korea are a little worse.  Not by much, but still worse.  Anyway, as my little way of protesting I am going to search for radio stations around the world that (how can I put it subtlely?) don’t suck.

Before I proceed, I must say that there are a handful of DFW radio stations that don’t suck.  On the Frequency Modulation dial there’s 98.3 (KNON, “The Voice of the People”, Eclectic Community Radio, Listen), 95.3  (KHYI, “The Range”, Alt Country/Americana, Listen) and 102.1 (KDGE, “The Edge”, Alternative, Listen).  On the Amplitude Modulation dial there’s 1080 (KRLD, “News Radio”, Listen) because of their news, weather, traffic and Texas Rangers broadcasts.

To kick off the series, let’s head down to Austin for a little Triple A radio via 107.1, KGSR, “Radio Austin” (click on their logo below to listen live):
150px-kgsr-fm Check out their playlist archives and you’ll understand why I’m recommending them. By comparison, here’s the shudder-inducing playlist of DFW’s sole (supposedly) AAA radio station, Mix 102.9. Yech.
